"Porto Garibaldi un tempo si chiamava Magnavacca: sembra aver acquisito tale nome per indicare una vasta zona situata lungo la costa adriatica priva (vacua) di colture. Tale denominazione venne cambiata a seguito di una petizione dei comacchiesi nel 1919, per ricordare lo sbarco di Garibaldi avvenuto il 3 agosto 1849 nella vicina spiaggia. Fin dal secolo XIII la località era nota col nome di «Portum Maivache». La prima chiesa, secondo documenti del sec. XII, esisteva su uno dei tanti isolotti, dedicata a San Nicolò; mentre un secondo oratorio detto «di «Magnavacca» e dedicato all' Immacolata Concezione, divenne sede provvisoria della parrocchia con decreto datato 22 maggio 1884 del vescovo di Comacchio mons. Tullio Sericci. Nel 1887 il primo parroco don Achille Ricini costruì dalle fondamenta una nuova chiesa parrocchiale, distrutta nel 1944 da eventi bellici. La chiesa attuale, costruita su progetto Cavallini-Capezzuoli, intitolata come la precedente all' Immacolata Concezione della B. Vergine Maria, fu benedetta nel 1948 dal vescovo mons. Paolo Babini e consacrata dal vescovo mons. Filippo Franceschi il 7 dicembre 1978. In precedenza il territorio parrocchiale era sottoposto in parte alla chiesa parrocchiale di S. Giuseppe in Bosco Eliceo e in parte alla chiesa parrocchiale di S. Cassiano in Comacchio." (visit link)

Porto Garibaldi was once called Magnavacca: it seems to have acquired this name to indicate a vast area located along the Adriatic coast devoid (vacua) of crops. This name was changed following a petition from the Comacchiesi in 1919, to commemorate Garibaldi's landing on August 3, 1849 in the nearby beach. Since the 13th century the locality was known under the name of "Portum Maivache". The first church, according to documents of the century. XII, existed on one of the many islets, dedicated to San Nicolò; while a second oratory called «di« Magnavacca »and dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, became the provisional seat of the parish with a decree dated May 22, 1884 of the bishop of Comacchio, Msgr. Tullio Sericci. In 1887 the first parish priest Don Achille Ricini built a new parish church from the foundations, which was destroyed in 1944 by war events. The current church, built on a Cavallini-Capezzuoli project, named after the previous one to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was blessed in 1948 by the bishop mons. Paolo Babini and consecrated by the bishop Msgr. Filippo Franceschi on 7 December 1978. Previously the parish territory was subjected in part to the parish church of S. Giuseppe in Bosco Eliceo and in part to the parish church of S. Cassiano in Comacchio.
