This stamp of the Poste Italiane shows the famous façade of the Chiesa di San Michele in Foro in Lucca. The church was built in the 11th to 14th century in the so called "romanico pisano" style. The façade, with a large series of sculptures and inlays, was built for a higher planned nave, which did not come to pass - hence the disproportionate height of the façade compared to the church building behind it. On the summit, flanked by two other angels, is the 4 m-tall statue of St. Michael the Archangel.
The stamp was issued on October 31th, 1946 as part of the commemorative series "Avvento della Repubblica".
