The Waymark listing in which a view of the Barnes Rexall Drugs and The Hanover Bank from circa 1960 is recreated in April 2021. The scene is located in Ashland, Virginia, on North Railroad Avenue looking north from the west side of the railroad tracks just north of the intersection with Thompson and England Streets.
Barnes Drug Store

In 1899, pharmacist C.A. Barnes bought out a pharmacy owned by Woolfolk and Ellis. He established Barnes Drug Store just north of Thompson St on the west side of the railroad tracks.

A few years later, the post office had moved south on Railroad Ave into another building. In 1919, the original Hanover Bank building was constructed next to Barnes Drug Store in the “Beaux Arts” style, with paired columns and a classical arched window.

Although the drugstore is gone, the historic Barnes Drug building at 102 N. Railroad Ave is still part of the retail district of historic Ashland.

Hanover National Bank

On February 5, 1903, Hanover National Bank of Ashland was established in Ashland, VA (according to bank history records maintained by the FFIEC). Hanover Bank’s first home was a little frame building erected north of Thompson St., near the post office. It was Hanover County’s first bank.

In 1919, the bank built an impressive brick building at 103 North Railroad Avenue in the latest Beaux Arts fashion, complete with paired columns and a classical arched window.

The bank was so proud of their new building that a fine pen and ink drawing was printed on their checks during the 1920’s. The bank was acquired by First Virginia Bank in 1985, which was then acquired by Branch Banking and Trust Company of Virginia (BB&T) in 2003. No longer home to a bank, the distinctive Hanover Bank building is still a landmark on the tracks in downtown Ashland, providing unique commercial office space.

The drug store is now home to Homemades by Suzanne, a restaurant/caterer/sandwich shop. Current occupants of The Hanover Bank Building include insurance services, a certified public accountant, a mental health counseling clinic, and a holistic wellness and massage studio.
