Weighing in at 35,000 tons and with a length of over two football fields, the USS Alabama was the fourth (and last) of the South Dakota class of battleships commissioned during World War II. Launched in February 1942, the USS Alabama spent time in the North Atlantic before proceeding to the Pacific theater where she participated in several operations including the Battle of Leyte Gulf which was also commemorated on a US postage stamp. After a brief overhaul in early 1945, the USS Alabama returned to the Pacific where she remained for the rest of the war.
All four South Dakota class battleships were decommissioned shortly after World War II and two were eventually scrapped. The other two, the USS Massachusetts and the USS Alabama became permanent museums, the former at Fall River MA and the latter at the USS Alabama Memorial Park in Mobile. The retired battleship has become such an iconic symbol of its namesake state that it was included on a postage stamp issued in 2002 offering “Greetings from Alabama.”
The USS Alabama Memorial Park also includes the USS Drum, a Gato class submarine of World War II vintage. (Gato class submarines were featured in a set of commemorative postage stamps issued in 2000.) The museum offers self-guided tours of both the submarine and the battleship.
