"Bayeux British Military Cemetery, which houses the bodies of 4,000 British soldiers and 181 Canadian soldiers, is the largest British WWII military cemetery in France. The graves of Australian soldiers are also found here. , New Zealanders, South Africans, Poles, Russians, French, Czechs, Italians and Germans.

British tradition has it that soldiers are buried with their brothers in arms near the place where they were killed, which explains the scattering of British military graves. The Calvados department alone has nineteen military cemeteries and nearly one hundred monuments.

The city of Bayeux was liberated on June 7, 1944. No combat had taken place there, it had suffered little damage. Bayeux served as a base for the British army during the Battle of Normandy, and many soldiers buried in this cemetery died in the field hospital which was located southwest of the city. "
