"A PIONEER GONE
John Rominger, one of the earliest settlers and pioneers of the San Luis Valley passed from among us on (January) the 20th, and was laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery at Saguache on the 24th.
His last illness was of long duration and much suffering, he having been confined to his bed for over 2 months. The lamented deceased was born in St. Joseph, Missouri April the 20, 1860. His parents, Martin and Frances Rominger, were of German birth and came to this country in 1853 and 1856. They were married in New Orleans in 1858 and from that city they moved to St. Joseph, where they conducted the first hotel open there. From there the family moved to the present site of Del Norte, then open range and from thence to the east side of the valley where the deceased grew to manhood, and on May 14, 1890 was married to Miss Thersa Eilinghoff, who survives him. He was one of a family of
11 of whom 7 are now living.
In 1894 he moved to his late home on the upper Saguache, where his family and many friends mourn his loss. He leaves to widowhood a devoted and affectionate wife, and 5 loving and well beloved children.
At the funeral many friends assembled to testify to their respect for the deceased and their sympathy for the sorrowing family.
Among the relations present were Frank Rominger of Mirage, Martin Rominger of Salt Lake, brothers of the deceased, Mrs. Barnhardt Krachlauer of Denver, Mrs. Bertha Hadwicker of Pueblo and Mrs. Emil Tobler of Canon City. Two other sisters were unable to be present, Mrs. Bertray of Denver and Mrs. Anna Stansell of El Paso.
There was good music by the Baptist Choir and an excellant, though brief address by the Pastor, Dr. Hall."
