"The county seat of Warren County, located in the central part of Elkhorn Township. Authorities differ as to whether a Dr. Bruin made the first settlement on the site of Warrenton in 1818 or whether Mordecai Morgan, a native of Shelby County, Kentucky made it in 1814. As soon as Warren County was created in 1833, different communities began to clamor to have the county seat. The most heated contest developed between New Boston and Warrenton. Finally, a specially appointed commission selected the latter and named it in honor of the new county. In May, 1837, proposals were made for the erection of a courthouse in the victorious town." ~ State Historical Society of Missouri
