Dle výpovedi jeho wingmenna Lt. Garlocka zacal Lt. Schmid z neznámého duvodu z operacní letové hladiny kolem sedmi kilometru prudce klesat. Lt. Garlock tedy ve snaze neporušit uložený rádiový klid svého vedoucího následoval. Let se stával stále strmejším až došlo k prekrocení maximální povolené rychlosti. Lt.

According to his wingmen, Lt. Garlock started by Lt. Schmid for a unknown reason from the operational flight level of about seven kilometers drop sharply. Lt. So Garlock followed his leader in an effort not to disturb the stored radio calm. The flight became steeper and steeper until the maximum speed limit was exceeded. Lt. Garlock disengaged from the leader, but during the selection of the dive flight, the maximum multiples of the design of his machine were exceeded. Lt. Garlock was rescued by parachute after the destruction of the plane, Lt. Schmid died. So much for what Lt. Garlock. The second variant is also offered, supported by the testimonies of witnesses, namely that the planes collided in the air and Lt. Garlock tried to "hit" his mistake ...

Mustang Lt. Schmida landed on a field several hundred meters east of the village of Kyjovice. The pilot allegedly tried to jump out of the machine, but the parachute did not open and landed near his machine. The pilot was buried in Kyjovice, after the war the body was transported to the military cemetery of St. Avold in France, where he is to this day.

In 2002, Mr. Miloslav Grygar built a monument in the village of Kyjovice to honor the memory of the American pilot.
