The Red Rock Craters and Lakes cover an area of approx 550Ha and comprise numerous well preserved maar craters and scoria cones. The maars are broad craters which extend below the general ground level. The scoria cones are small steep sided volcanoes.
The Red Rocks Volcanic Complex contains more than 40 eruption points which occurred over thousands of years, the red tinge to the rock is due to oxidisation of iron present in the lava during eruptions.
Co-ordinates are taken from the Red Rocks Lookout
