The town of Os Peares is not only an administrative anomaly, but also a showcase of the Ribeira Sacra for the thousands of people who drive over the bridge that crosses the mouth of the Sil in the Miño. And what this small town divided between four municipalities and two provinces shows is not exactly the best urban planning in the world. Its four neighborhoods, one per municipality, grew disorderly on a very steep terrain, until composing the current picture of recently built single-family homes, many of them supported on large columns. A strange urban landscape that the Ribeira Sacra tourism consortium is now proposing to make up with murals.
Os Peares will receive almost half of the 32,000 euros that this association will invest this year in the realization of large murals in public spaces. The program continues a project already started in 2016, which financed artistic murals in a good part of the twenty-one municipalities that make up this natural region.
In a plenary session held yesterday in Parada de Sil, the consortium approved to invest throughout 2016 a total of 17,000 euros in murals in ten or eleven municipalities. Which ones remains to be seen. The deadline for interested municipalities to request it is now open. The novelty of this year is that there will be 15,000 euros just for Os Peares.
This town with houses located in the Ourense municipalities of A Peroxa and Nogueira de Ramuín and in the Lugo towns of Pantón and Carballedo, suffers like almost all the others in the interior of Galicia, the scourge of the facades without painting or with worn coatings. But in their case they are more exposed, due to their difficult orography and their location next to the busiest road in the entire Ribeira Sacra.
