This is a stone boundary marker, inscribed:

‘23 - The Boundary of the Parish of West Ham extends 95 feet north of this stone. 1864’.

The wording on the stone is very worn and becoming difficult to read. At first glance, the sequence number 23 now looks more like 22.

It is one of a long series of parish boundary markers around West Ham Parish, several of which still survive and which take various forms. The older ones, like this one, take the form of stone markers, whilst later the fashion was for metal plates. This marker is set into the low brick wall which marks the division between the Christian and Islamic sections of West Ham Cemetery and the West Ham Jewish Cemetery. Two more West Ham boundary stones of 1864 and 1885 are still in existence within the Jewish Cemetery, over the wall.

The stone was placed here to mark the boundary between West Ham (to the south) and Wanstead (to the north) parishes. This part of Wanstead parish later became Cann Hall parish.

Access to view this boundary marker is from the entrance to West Ham Cemetery on Cemetery Road, E7.
