Op deze plaats stond al in de 17e eeuw een zogenaamde overhaal om schepen van het ene water naar het andere water te kunnen tillen. Een overhaal (ook wel overtoom genoemd) is een installatie waarbij een schip over land van het ene in het andere water wordt getrokken, met het doel een peilverschil te overwinnen. De overhaal kan worden gezien als een voorloper van de schutsluis. Een overhaal bestond vaak uit een helling met daarop balken die met vet ingesmeerd waren. Het schip werd hier letterlijk uit het water getrokken en over de balken naar een ander water verplaatst. Soms werden in plaats van balken boomstammen gebruikt, waarover het schip kon rollen.
Na de stormvloed van 1916 werd besloten om de overhaal te vervangen door een scheepslift. De hijsinstallatie werd gemaakt door de firma P.M. Duyvis uit Koog aan de Zaan. De draagkooi voor de schepen kon elektrisch worden bediend. Aan de noordzijde werd naast de hijsinstallatie een bedieningsgebouw neergezet. Later werd er nog een tweede gebouwtje bij geplaatst. In 1924 was de scheepslift gereed voor gebruik en heeft tot 1969 dienst gedaan voor de beroepsvaart (met name voor het vervoer van tuinbouwproducten). In de jaren 1992 en 1993 werd de installatie gerestaureerd. Vanaf die tijd doet de lift dienst voor de pleziervaart.
De scheepslift is in 1985 erkend als rijksmonument vanwege het zeldzame karakter ervan en de historische betekenis. Zo werden op deze plek eeuwenlang schepen overgezet naar de Broekerhaven, die een concurrent was van de haven van Enkhuizen.

Already in the 17th century there was a so-called overhaul at this place to be able to lift ships from one water to another. Overtoom (also called overtoom) is an installation in which a ship is pulled over land from one water to another, with the aim of overcoming a level difference. The overhaul can be seen as a precursor to the lock. Overhauls often consisted of a slope with beams on it that were greased. The ship was literally pulled out of the water here and moved over the beams to another water. Sometimes, instead of beams, tree trunks were used on which the ship could roll.
After the storm surge of 1916 it was decided to replace the overhaul with a boat lift. The hoisting installation was made by P.M. Duyvis from Koog aan de Zaan. The carrier cage for the ships could be operated electrically. On the north side, an operating building was erected next to the hoisting installation. Later a second building was added. In 1924 the ship's lift was ready for use and was used for commercial shipping (especially for the transport of horticultural products) until 1969. The installation was restored in 1992 and 1993. From that time on, the lift has been used for pleasure craft.
The boat lift was recognized as a national monument in 1985 due to its rare character and historical significance. For example, for centuries ships were transferred from this location to the Broekerhaven, which was a competitor of the harbor of Enkhuizen.
