The Orchard Covenant Church is a member of the the Evangelical Covenant Denomination of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). The denomination has more than 875 congregations in the United States and Canada with ministries on five continents. It was founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants. Historically they were Lutheran in theology but separated from Lutheranism to form a separate, evangelical multi-ethnic denomination.

The Orchard Covenant Church building was built by the First Congregational Society of Indian Orchard in 1863. The Gothic Revival style building is the third oldest religious structure in Springfield. In 1865, the Evangelical Religious Society of Indian Orchard took over the building. Until 1996 the church was still known as the First Congregational Church of Indian Orchard but the number of members was dwindling. Then the Evangelical Covenant Church of Springfield joined the membership and they installed the first full-time pastor. The church then became known as the Orchard Covenant Church.

The façade of the main block of the church has a set of stairs leading up to a protruding pavilion with a double-door entrance and a three-sided roof with finials on each end and decorative woodwork under the roof-line. The main block has a steeply pitched gable roof, lancet windows on each side of the pavilion, and a hexagonal stained glass window above. On the west side is a three-story square tower with an entrance at the bottom level, louvered windows in the middle, and a belfry on top. The east side has a small square tower with a pyramidal roof. The east side is four bays wide with tall Gothic style windows. A wing at the back of the church on the east side contains an auxiliary entrance.

In 1956, additions were added to the church to complete the complex. These include the community hall and kitchen area extending from the west side.
