"In this month of August 1914, this valley was entirely occupied by the camps of the French cavalry regiments and the artillery in charge of the general support. At this time of the beginnings of the automobile, the horse remained the main traction force for cars, ambulances, field forges, supply wagons, troop luggage, wagons and ammunition boxes. Hundreds of them were needed to move all the vehicles. Meadows and fodder are of prime quality and the rich valley provides abundant and clean water. At this time, the water mills are still in use and will be very useful for the soldiers' bread."
