" Le premier hôtel de ville appelé à l'époque "Maison de la Paix" se situait à l'angle de la Grand Place et de la rue Henry Leroy. Cet immeuble au fronton de style baroque fut occupé par l'administration depuis les années 1610 jusqu'après la Révolution française en 1853, date à laquelle il est revendu à un particulier.
Par la suite, ce fut "l'Hôtel de l'Ange" construit en haut de la Grand Place qui fut aménagé en Hôtel de Ville. Au cours de son occupation, celui-ci reçu quelques modifications. Le bâtiment fut rehaussé et on y adjoint un balcon et des balustres en pierre ce qui faisait une construction de style traditionnel éclectique. Le bâtiment fut détruit par une explosion en 1956.
A la fin des années 60, le Conseil Communal décida d'acquérir les bâtiments de l'ancienne tannerie qui appartenait à la famille Van Cutsem.
Etablies en 1790, la tannerie Van Cutsem a été durant une bonne moitié du XXe siècle une entreprise très florissante; elle occupait près de 2000 personnes. L'industriel et tanneur Van Cutsem s'était fait construire une imposante maison entre la place et son usine située le long du boulevard. L'ensemble était ainsi divisé: la tannerie, l'hôtel de maître avec le porche d'entrée, les bureaux.
Déjà peuplée à l’âge préhistorique, puis lors de la période romaine, la ville de Soignies garde de nombreuses traces dont certaines sont visibles au musée du Vieux Cimetière.
Traversée par la Senne, rivière autrefois appelée « Kenaste », Soignies se distingue par un monastère dont les origines remontent à l’an 650. À cette date, Vincent Madelgaire s’installa à Soignies et y bâtit un monastère. Depuis, il est devenu un personnage complètement associé à la vie sonégienne.
Centre européen de la pierre de taille, ville millénaire, Soignies combine habilement le patrimoine, le folklore, le commerce, l’agriculture et l’activité industrielle.
Ville d’art et d’histoire, Soignies est riche de sa Collégiale millénaire, de son centre-ville entièrement rénové, de châteaux, de fermes, de paysages champêtres, de ses musées mais aussi de ses carrières de pierre bleue qui ont fait sa renommée à travers le pays et même à travers le monde."
