[FR] Le premier cinéma de Rodez, le Family-Ciné, a été créé sous les voûtes de la chapelle de l’ancien couvent Notre-Dame en 1922. La façade sur la place de la Préfecture se parera plus tard de mosaïques, notamment le tympan recouvert de l’enseigne colorée et abrité par
une marquise.

On doit à un brillant diplômé de mécanique, Jean-Baptiste Chanoux, originaire de la ville de Turenne en Corrèze, et un temps chef du télégraphe à la poste de Rodez, de s’être lancé dans la grande aventure du cinématographe. Les projecteurs à charbons, dont la lumière provient d’un arc électrique, occasionnent parfois quelques surprises quand par exemple les charbons s’enflamment.

Au Family les classiques français distribués par Cinédis et Artistes Associés étaient projetés.

La façade du commerce d’aujourd’hui nous laisse deviner encore le passé religieux de l’édifice. Sous la rose de la façade, la porte
conserve ses colonnes surmontées de volutes ioniques et l’arc de
cercle abritant le tympan autrefois sculpté. Les contreforts de la
chapelle sont visibles passage des Maçons.

[EN] The first cinema in Rodez, the Family-Ciné, was established under the vaults of the Chapel of the former Notre-Dame convent in 1922. The facade would be decked out in mosaics later on, especially the tympanum covered by the colored sign and and sheltered by a canopy.

One owes it to Jean-Baptiste Chanoux, a brilliant certified mechanic, from the town of Turenne in the Corrèze department, to have a go at the grand cinematographic adventure. The carbon arc projectors, the light of which came from an electric arc, were the source of a few surprises when, for example, the charcoal caught fire.

The facade of the business today still lets us guesse the religious past of the edifice. Underneath the rose window of the facade, the door preserves the columns topped with ionic capitals and the semi-circular tympanum which was originally sculpted.
