Continuing the ramparts this square tower enhanced with a steeple allowed the guards to watch the countryside and possibly sound the alarm, it was built in the 13th century and then decorated with a dome on which was installed the first village clock; the machicolations are still visible on the north face.

The crenellated ramparts and twelve towers with loopholes and machicolations defended the town and entry into Grignan was through six gates: the Porte du Tricot, the Porte St Jean, the Porte de Costefroide, the Porte de la Glacière, the Porte de the Grande Tour and the Porte de Costechaude.

Poursuivant les remparts cette Tour carrée rehaussée d'un clocheton permettait aux gardes de surveiller la campagne et éventuellement de donner l'alarme, elle fut construite au XIIIème siècle et ensuite agrémentée d'un dôme sur lequel fut installée la première horloge du village; les mâchicoulis sont encore visibles sur la face nord.

Les remparts crénelés et douze tours à meurtrières et à mâchicoulis défendaient le bourg et l'entrée dans Grignan se faisait par six portes : la porte du Tricot, la porte St Jean, la porte de Costefroide, la porte de la Glacière, la porte de la Grande Tour et la porte de Costechaude.
