The Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Nursing Home is named after Private Douglas T. Jacobson, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient who fought heroically during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman on October 5, 1945.
Located at the entrance to the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Home in Port Charlotte, Florida is a concrete mural with several memorials attached to it. One of the memorials is to Joan Jacobson. Joan organized several fundraisers for the residents of the veterans home and became a leading benefactor and donor in the community. To honor her for her outstanding contributions a citizen memorial has been placed near the parking lot.
