The "Hasenloch" (rabbit hole) in Pottenstein

This legend is well known in Franconia and continues to attract tourists and school classes to the small cave in Franconian Switzerland. But be careful, there is a gruesome burrow there.

The legend tells of some young boys who skipped church services on Sundays and instead preferred to romp around secretly through the forest. They found a snow-white hare, which could not walk properly, but always pulled a leg behind it. The boys chased the poor rabbit through the forest for fun until he hid in a cave. Only one of the boys dared to go into the cave, the others remained standing for fear of the dark entrance.

After a while a pitiful cry was heard, the boys ran into the village and alerted their parents. The boys' fathers hurried to the cave, where they found the boys body torn to pieces on the floor. The hare was a "Höhlenpöppel" (a Poltergeist) and, as a mockery, had turned into a lame hare. Since that day the cave has been called the "Hasenloch" or "rabbit hole".

You can visit this cave but take a light with you and be beware of hares...

The Hasenloch is a hall cave in which extensive material from the Paleolithic was found. The Hasenloch was therefore a station for Stone Age hunters in the Ice Age. Bones found in the cave prove that mammoths, cave lions, cave bears and rhinos lived in the area and were also hunted by humans.
