Will the Germans defend Isigny-sur-Mer? Around 7 p.m. on June 8, General Charles H. Gerhardt, head of the 29th US Infantry Division, arrived in La Cambe, he did not hide his discontent when he learned that the attack of the 175th Infantry Regiment on Isigny-sur-Mer has not yet started, he orders Colonel Paul R. Goode to proceed immediately. After three kilometers, the Americans encountered a German retarding element in the hamlet of Arthenay; the Shermans set fire to several buildings. In Osmanville, the 1st Battalion must overcome a new enemy resistance point made up of infantry around a few anti-tank guns. It is almost midnight when the head of the American column arrives in sight of Isigny; the spectacle is daunting, the city is in flames following the violent Allied naval and air bombardments. Faced with this scene, an improvised conference brings together General Gerhardt, his deputy and the leader of the 175th US IR, will the Germans defend Isigny and the passage of the Aure? A few moments later, Lieutenant-Colonel Edward A. Gill's 3rd Battalion and a tank platoon of the 747th Tank Battalion, "stimulated" by Brigadier General Norman D. Cota, the division's second in command, cross the last kilometers; the infantrymen of the K Company approach the bridge and advance cautiously, to their astonishment it is intact and undefended, the Americans realize that the city is empty of enemies. At dawn, the 175th IR liberated the ruins of Isigny-sur-Mer, the few German snipers are mercilessly hunted down with 75mm shots and bazookas, adding a few more ruins. Les Allemands vont-ils défendre Isigny-sur-Mer ? Vers 19 heures le 8 juin, le General Charles H. Gerhardt, chef de la 29th US Infantry Division, arrive à La Cambe, il ne cache pas son mécontentement quand il apprend que l’attaque du 175th Infantry Regiment sur Isigny-sur-Mer n’a pas encore démarré, il donne l’ordre au Colonel Paul R. Goode d’avancer immédiatement. Après trois kilomètres, les Américains se heurtent à un élément retardateur allemand dans le hameau d’Arthenay ; les Sherman incendient plusieurs bâtiments. A Osmanville, le 1st Battalion doit venir à bout d’un nouveau point de résistance ennemi composé d’infanterie autour de quelques canons antichars. Il est presque minuit, quand la tête de la colonne américaine arrive en vue d’Isigny ; le spectacle est dantesque, la ville est en flammes suite aux violents bombardements alliés naval et aérien. Face à cette scène, une conférence improvisée réunit le General Gerhardt, son adjoint et le chef du 175th US IR, les Allemands vont-ils défendre Isigny et le passage de l’Aure ? Quelques instants plus tard, le 3rd Battalion du Lieutenant-Colonel Edward A. Gill et un peloton de chars du 747th Tank Battalion, « stimulés » par le Brigadier General Norman D. Cota, commandant en second de la division, franchissent les derniers kilomètres ; les fantassins de la K Company approchent du pont et avancent prudemment, à leur grand étonnement il est intact et non défendu, les Américains réalisent que la ville est vide d’ennemis. A l’aube, le 175th IR a libéré les ruines d’Isigny-sur-Mer, les quelques snipers allemands sont impitoyablement pourchassés à coups de 75 mm et de bazookas, ajoutant quelques ruines supplémentaires.
