The Vélodrome is a large fold lying down to the south, formed at the end of the Tertiary era (between 23 and 5 million years ago) at the front of the Alps. It is made up of sedimentary series (also called molasses) composed mainly of sands, sandstones and conglomerates (rock composed of pebbles welded by a finer rock cement) produced by the erosion of the alpine chain.
