The Angus town of Carnoustie on the east coast of Scotland is famous for its golf links and the Championship Course which has staged the Open Championship on eight occasions between 1931 and 2018. After the 1975 event the course fell out of favour due to the lack of hotel facilities in the town and a decision was made to build a large hotel behind the 18th green.

Building started in 1998 and was to be completed by the time the championship came back in July the following year. The distinctive white-harled building was opened with 96 bedrooms with the last item being put in place being a large Rolex clock which was brought in by helicopter just before the championship started.

The Rolex clock was the largest in the world at the time, and weighs in at 450kg with a 2.8m diameter face. The circumference is gold, with a white face. The hands are green as well as the digits. A gold Rolex logo is placed on the twelfth digit at the top.
