The original Fort Myers Beach public pier was built in 1946. It replaced the Winkler Beach Hotel pier that was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1944. It was most popular with fisherman and tourists watching the sunsets. In 1950 the county purchased the land north of the pier and created a public park with picnic tables and parking. The original wooden pier was deemed unsafe, condemned and closed to the public in 1975. Construction of a newer prestressed concrete pier was started which now included an ADA accessible ramp entrance, a souvenir shop/bait house and a “T” shaped extension at the end of the pier that had benches and a shaded roof area.
