Gallatin, Tennessee - By an act of the Tennessee General Assembly, Gallatin became the county seat of Sumner County on February 26, 1802, when commissioners sold the first town lots. Newly laid out, the town embraced 42 ½ acres. The site had been purchased from James Trousdale’s North Carolina Grant No. 1 by the commissioners Samuel Donelson, Shadrach Nye, James Wilson, Charles Donaho, and Major Thomas Murray. The name honors Albert Gallatin, a Swiss-born Pennsylvania congressman and statesman of note who had helped Tennessee gain admission to the Union in 1796.
