Erstmals 1296 urkundlich erwähnt, hatte sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte Wandsbek von einer dörflichen Ansiedlung zu einem Lehngut und einem adligen Gut mit herrschaftlichem Sitz, über einen Fabrikort zu einer kreisfreien Stadt mit 28.000 Einwohnern (1901) entwickelt.
Wandsbek verlor 1937 seine kommunale Selbstständigkeit. Damals hatte die Stadt 48.000 Einwohner.
Im Zuges des Groß- Hamburg-Gesetz wurde die heutige Struktur der Hansestadt Hamburg erschaffen.
Seit 1949 gibt es den Bezirk Wandsbek mit 400.000 Einwohnern in Hamburg. Folgende 18 Stadtteile sind dem Bezirk Wandsbek zugeordnet:

First mentioned in a document in 1296, Wandsbek had developed over the centuries from a village settlement to a fief and a noble estate with a stately seat, via a factory site to a district town with 28,000 inhabitants (1901).
Wandsbek lost its municipal independence in 1937. At that time the town had 48,000 inhabitants.
The present structure of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg was created in the wake of the Greater Hamburg Act.
Since 1949 the district of Wandsbek with 400,000 inhabitants has existed in Hamburg. The following 18 districts are assigned to the district of Wandsbek:
