Vestige du nouveau château (1) que fait édifier, entre 1190 et 1209, Guillaume II, conte de Forcalquier dans le cimetière de Saint Nicolas, le donjon de Pertuis est un des rares exemple d'architectures militaire du du Moyen Age en Provence.

Il est compose d‘un rez—de-chaussée et de deux salles superposées. voûtées en berceau brise et couvert d‘une terrasse entourée d‘un crénelage sur mâchicoulis -1-
Un escalier est inclus dans la maçonnerie du mur nord. L'entrée se situait au premier étage: c’est la petite baie placée au dessus des deux portes actuelles.

Le château comportait vraisemblablement le donjon et quatre murs d’enceinte cantonnés de tours. A la fin du XIV“ siècle, Guillaume Roger, seigneur de Pertuis et son fils. le célèbre Raymond de Turenne, en guerre avec la comtesse de Provence, renforcent les fortifications et transforment le château. Un vaste corps de logis est alors construit du cote sud -2-. A partir de 1596, à la l'indes guerres de Religion, le château est peu à peu démantelé. La destruction de l’enceinte nord, du côte de la ville, permet d’agrandir la place du Marche (actuelle place Mirabeau). La grosse tour ronde. dite tour de la Prison ou de Jalette, est détrune lors du percement de la rue Neuve (rue Danton), en 1819, ainsi que la porte de la Ville -3-. Entre 1605 et 1607, le donjon acquis par la ville au domaine du roi est surélevée d'un clocher -4-
Depuis la ruine du vieux clocher de l'ancienne église Saint Pierre, il n'y avait plus de clocher à Pertuis.
En 1605, les habitants se plaignaient de cette situation : "il semble que l'on soit au plus mauvais village de Provence", disent-ils.
Le projet de clocher, adopté par le conseil de ville fut dessiné par Esprit Boyer, maçon aixois, Contrôleur des bâtiments royaux.
Surmonté de quatre clochetons, il abrite une grosse cloche centrale, le bourdon du XVIIe et deux plus petites.
Les deux grandes ouvertures du Rez de chaussée sont perçées lors de l'installation de l'auditoire de justice et du greffe royal au début du XVIIe.

La plus ancienne mention d'une horloge communale “‘l’orrologe Vieux” date de 1407 (2). Installée sur 1a façade du donjon en 1609, elle ne sera remplacée qu'en 1808, indiquant l’heure aux Pertuisens pendant presque quatre siécles !
L’ horloge actuelle a été fabriquée par Maison Paul Odobay du Jura en 1887. Mais son mécanisme a dû être changé a la fin des années 1960.

Le donjon a été classé monument historique le 21 décembre 1984

Vestige of the new castle (1) built between 1190 and 1209 by William II, Forcalquier's tale in the cemetery of Saint Nicolas, the keep of Pertuis is one of the rare examples of military architecture from the Middle Ages in Provence.

It consists of a ground floor and two superimposed rooms. barrel vaults breezed and covered with a terrace surrounded by a battlement on machicolation -1-
A staircase is included in the masonry of the north wall. The entrance was on the first floor: it is the small bay placed above the two current doors.

The castle probably included the keep and four surrounding walls surrounded by towers. At the end of the fourteenth century, Guillaume Roger, Lord of Pertuis and his son. the famous Raymond de Turenne, at war with the Countess of Provence, reinforce the fortifications and transform the castle. A large main building was then built on the south side -2-. From 1596, at the Indian Wars of Religion, the castle was gradually dismantled. The destruction of the northern wall, on the town's coast, allows the Place du Marche (now Place Mirabeau) to be extended. The big round tower. known as the Prison or Jalette tower, was destroyed during the opening of the rue Neuve (rue Danton), in 1819, as well as the Porte de la Ville -3-. Between 1605 and 1607, the keep acquired by the city from the domain of the king is raised by a bell tower -4-
Since the ruin of the old bell tower of the old Saint Pierre church, there was no longer a bell tower in Pertuis.
In 1605, the inhabitants complained about this situation: "it seems that we are in the worst village in Provence", they say.
The bell tower project, adopted by the town council, was designed by Esprit Boyer, mason from Aix, Controller of royal buildings.
Topped by four pinnacles, it houses a large central bell, the 17th century bourdon and two smaller ones.
The two large openings on the ground floor were drilled during the installation of the audience of justice and the royal registry at the beginning of the 17th century.

The earliest mention of a communal clock “l'orrologe’’ old horology ”dates from 1407 (2). Installed on the facade of the keep in 1609, it will not be replaced until 1808, indicating the time to the Pertuisens for almost four centuries!
The current clock was made by Maison Paul Odobay du Jura in 1887. But its mechanism had to be changed at the end of the 1960s.

The keep was classified as a historical monument on December 21, 1984
