A 13th century hutch type oak chest in St Laurence's church, Shotteswell.

This style of chest was an advance on the six-board type. The pegged tongue-and-groove joinery used in its construction is far more durable than the nailed or pegged lap joints of the six-board chest. Instead of the slab legs of the six-board, made by extending the end pieces down to the floor, the hutch added extensions, or stiles, to lengthen the front and back pieces. These stiles extended down to the ground to make four legs. The end-pieces and front pieces were joined to the stiles with pegged tongue-and-groove joints.

Hutch type chests first appeared in the thirteenth century,

This chest, of late-13th-century origin, measures 3 ft 6 in long (1 m 7 cm), 1 ft 9½ (55 cm) in height (below the lid) and 1 ft 6 in wide (46 cm). There are the remains of contemporary ironwork on the front of the chest, the three straps rising from the bottom, which have damaged foliated ends with rosette discs and tendrils. Two other fragments have been reset rather casually on the front of the chest. The lid, although ancient and hung with strap-hinges, is probably later. On the front are two iron plate-locks, one of which is modern.
