=========================================================

Lieutenant Colonel Karel Kubánek, (October 29, 1916 Jilemnice - 1940 or 1941? Soviet Union, place unknown), was a pilot in the Czechoslovak army.

In June 1938 he was appointed an observer pilot. After the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, he was released from the Slovak army as a member of it and returned to Jilemnice.

Together with the pilots Karel Kopal from Tríc and Jan Vlk from Semily, he tried to join the resistance as a foreign soldier. With the help of members of the resistance group Defense of the Nation, they crossed the border into Poland on the night of August 5-6, 1939. Already on August 28, a group of pilots, in which Kubánek was, was accepted into the Polish army, as members of the so-called Legion of Czechs and Slovaks in Poland. Shortly afterwards, on September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland.

On September 17, 1939, the Soviet Union invaded to Poland and on September 19, 1939, the legion was captured by the Red Army. After captivity, Karel Kubánek and several friends tried to get to Romania again, in a different way. He was arrested again by the NKVD, interrogated, charged with espionage and sentenced to three years of forced labor. To carry them out, he was taken to the Pecory river basin, where he was interned in one of the local gulags and died in it.
