Le lieu historique national du Canada du Château-des-Gouverneurs est situé en bordure de la rivière Richelieu à Sorel au Québec. Occupée à l'origine comme résidence d'été par les premiers gouverneurs et commandants militaires britanniques de Québec, la maison d'un étage et demi est constituée d'un noyau rectangulaire de style québécois traditionnel flanqué d'ailes, le tout coiffé de toits à pignons à forte pente vers l'avant. À l'arrière, une véranda ouverte surplombe les jardins qui ont déjà fait partie d'une plus grande seigneurie.
L'invasion américaine de 1775 avait de nouveau démontré l'importance stratégique de Sorel. Le général Haldimand acquit la seigneurie au nom de la Couronne en 1781 et y fit ériger cette résidence à l'intention du commandant en chef en temps de guerre. D'abord occupée par le général de Riedesel, cette demeure fut ensuite habitée surtout comme maison d'été par les gouverneurs Dorchester, Prescott, Dalhousie et Aylmer, et par les commandants en chef St. Leger, Brock, Colborne, Jackson, D'Urban et Eyre. Le prince William Henry, plus tard Guillaume IV, y fut reçu en 1737.

Description of Historic Place:
The Governors’ Cottage National Historic Site of Canada is located on the banks of the Richelieu River in Sorel, Quebec. Originally occupied as a summer residence by the early British governors and military commanders of Quebec, the one-and-a-half-storey house has a traditional Quebec-style rectangular core flanked by wings, all under steep, front-sloping gable roofs. To the rear, an open verandah looks out over gardens that were once part of a larger seigneury.
The American invasion of 1775 showed anew the strategic importance of Sorel. Governor Haldimand acquired the seigneury for the Crown in 1781 and built this house so that the commander-in-chief might reside in it in time of war. First occupied by General de Riedesel. It was then used as a summer residence by Governors Dorchester, Prescott, Dalhousie and Aylmer, and by commanders-in-chief St. Leger, Brock, Colborne, Jackson, D'Urban and Eyre. Prince William Henry, later William IV, was here welcomed to Sorel in 1787.
