The railroad created Gallup in 1881 as a stop for coal and timber. Situated between the Navajo and Zuni populations, Gallup quickly became a source for native rugs and jewelry. Established in 1913, Richardson's is the oldest of the traders located in the commercial district. The building, as was common at the beginning of the 20th century, would be of local sandstone blocks with a stucco finish. The company now spreads through several other buildings on the block and faces Rte. 66, which it predates by several decades.
