The name of this lake, located at an altitude of 4278 m, can be translated as "Colorful Laguna". Accordingly to the legend, the reddish tonality of the water comes from the shed blood of the gods. The predominant red comes in fact from the red sediments and the algae existent in the water. It's also this algae which makes the flamingos having their characteristic pink color. And there are flamingos here, during the summer. From an almost extinct species, the James Flamingos.
A note to the small borax islands, which are white and offer an interesting visual contrast with the dark water.
