The archaeological site at Knossos was once the center of the bronze age Minoan civilization. It is located 5 km south of the port of Heraklion, Crete, Greece.

The Palaces and out buildings of Knossos were once the center of Minoan civilization during the late Bronze Age from about 1,380 to 1,100 BC. The site was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos. British archaeologist Sir Arthur John Evans and a team of archaeologist excavated the site from 1900 to 1935. Unfortunately he also restored the site to what he believed it must have looked like during the Bronze Age. Based on the similarity 1920s Art Deco architecture many do not accept that it retains its original appearance. Especially suspect are the paintings and frescoes.
The area around the main Palace of Knossos covers three acres of main building and five acres including the out-buildings.
