Carl Friedrich Gauß (1777-1855) and Wilhelm Weber (184-1891) invented the electromagnetic telegraph in 1833 - the ancestor of today's Internet. In doing so, they stretched their wire from the university's physics building in downtown Göttingen to the Göttingen observatory over the roofs of the city.

The double bronze statue stands on a stone base on the göttinger ramparts. The two figures are shown life-size and both wear clothes from the period. Gauß sits in an explanatory pose, while Weber stands next to him questioningly. Gauß originally had a wire in his hand - but unfortunately it is no longer there.
