De eerste kerk, gewijd aan Sint-Jozef, werd omstreeks 1875 gebouwd.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd deze kerk zwaar beschadigd en provisorisch hersteld.
In 1952 werd een stuk grond gekocht in het nieuwe centrum van Smeermaas en de architecten Erens en Daniëls ontwierpen een kerkgebouw in modernistische stijl dat tussen 1956 en 1957 werd opgericht.
Het is een bakstenen zaalkerk onder zadeldak. De kerk wordt geflankeerd door een vierkante toren.
Er is een beschilderd kruis op de voorgevel, een groenmarmeren altaar gemaakt door Piet Killiaerts, een beeld van de verrezen Christus, een Mariabeeld en geschilderde Kruiswegstaties en een glas-in-loodraam gemaakt door Edmond Florens.

During the Second World War this church was severely damaged and provisionally restored.
In 1952 a piece of land was bought in the new center of Smeermaas and the architects Erens and Daniëls designed a church building in a modernist style that was erected between 1956 and 1957.
It is a brick hall church under a gable roof. The church is flanked by a square tower.
There is a painted cross on the facade, a green marble altar made by Piet Killiaerts, a statue of the risen Christ, a statue of Mary and painted Stations of the Cross and a stained glass window made by Edmond Florens.
