La clairière est située dans le département de l'Oise, en forêt de Compiègne, sur le territoire de la commune de Compiègne. Son nom secondaire — de « clairière de Rethondes » — vient de sa proximité avec l'ancienne gare de Rethondesa qui était située sur la commune de Compiègne et non sur la commune voisine de Rethondes, dont elle était séparée par la rivière Aisne.
C'est ici, dans le wagon 2419D que fut signé l'armistice mettant fin à la 1ère Guerre mondiale, dans la nuit du 10 au 11 novembre 1918.
En 1922 le site est aménagé en tant que lieu de souvenir et de commémoration de la victoire.
En 1927, le wagon est installé dans un bâtiment construit pour cet effet.
En 1940, lors de la capitulation française, Hitler exige que l'armistice soit signé dans les mêmes conditions que celui de 1918 afin de laver l'affront de la défaite allemande.
Le wagon est ensuite emmené à Berlin afin d'y être exposé. En 1945, avant la fin de la guerre, les SS brûlent le wagon sur ordre d'Hitler.
A l'issue de la guerre, un nouveau bâtiment est construit pour abriter un wagon du même modèle que celui qui abritait la signature des actes. La clairière est redevenue un lieu de mémoire.

The clearing is located in the department of Oise, in the forest of Compiègne, on the territory of Compiègne.
