The American Legion medallion in front of his headstone gives a hint as to his military service, and further research indicates that he was an Apprentice Seaman in the US Navy, dying of disease at the naval training camp in San Francisco, CA. The inscription on his monument reads:

Connie
Russell
Byers

May 10, 1898
May 5, 1917

God gave -- He took
He will restore,
He does all
things well.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
