The Character Amédée-Prosper-Anatole Courbet is the second son of the Courbet wine merchant, who, from his wife, née Poulard, had two children, a daughter Céline (born in 1811), future Mrs. Cornet, and a son Alexandre (born in 1815 ). It was a wealthy and considered family in their hometown. His father died in 1836. However, he remained in Abbeville and continued his studies there at the Speri institution, from which he graduated.

After his baccalaureate, he went to Paris to the Favart institution, and he attended the Lycée Charlemagne courses. At the end of the 1845-1846 school year, he won second prize in special mathematics. In 1847, out of 126 pupils received, he entered the top fifteen at the École Polytechnique, promoting Bouquet de la Grye.

He arrived in Toulon in October 1849. His first vessel to embark as a young midshipman was L’Océan. Then, on November 18, 1849, he boarded a La Capricieuse sailing corvette. From Toulon he won Valparaiso, Gambier, Marquesas, Tahiti, Macao…

Then Courbet received the order to embark on L’Olivier who was in charge of pursuing the Levantine pirates during the Crimean War. He was appointed ensign in 1854 and lieutenant on 29 November 1856. On the Coligny, he participated in the Riff War.

At the beginning of 1858, a mission order sent him to Lorient to do shore service. Courbet hardly likes that. He boarded the Le Suffren training vessel. Then, on August 14, 1866, he was promoted to frigate captain.

On April 23, 1883, Courbet embarked on the Bayard, whose name remains inseparable from his. On May 26, 1883, a dispatch arrived from Indochina upset the whole of France: that of the massacre of several French soldiers and sailors by the Black Pavilions.

Courbet leaves with his fleet for Cochinchina on the spot and, on July 13, he arrives in front of Saigon. The orders are simple: act quickly. On the 18th, the squadron crushes the forts of Thuan-An and on the 20th, after a fierce battle, France wins the city against the Annamites, thanks to Rear Admiral Courbet.

On March 1, 1884, appointed vice-admiral, he received the command in chief of all the naval forces of the Far East.

On September 10, 1884, the government awarded him the military medal. On September 18, 1884, he was promoted to admiral.

History and the Tomb Nearly 2,100 French soldiers died during the Franco-Chinese War, the overwhelming majority suffering from illness.

The dead of the Far East Wing of Admiral Courbet were buried in two French military cemeteries, between June and July 1885, in Keelung (Taiwan) and in Magong (formerly Makung), in the Pescadores Islands, in off Taiwan.

At the beginning of 1885, Courbet experienced discomfort and pain. His state of health deteriorated during his campaigns in China. The admiral died on June 11, 1885 at 9:48 p.m., the "Bayard" chaplain, stationed in the harbor of Makung, administering the last sacraments to him.

His body will be brought back to France by the "Bayard" (his warship). France will pay him a national funeral at the Invalides on August 28, 1885.

On September 1, his hometown will complete them with farewells of equal fervor. He now rests in the Notre-Dame de la Chapelle Cemetery.

The tomb is a monument representing a group in stone and bronze (allegory, naval cannon), this monument is also decorated with marine anchors. There are few inscriptions, on the front "1827-1885", on the right side "Hue. Son-Tay. Ke-lung.", On the left side "Pescadores. Fou-Tchéou." which correspond to his military victories and finally to the back "To Admiral COURBET, his sister."
