The Gesundheitsgarten is a small, public park behind the Marien Hospital in Erftstadt-Liblar. Some sculptures, art objects and scientific objects are permanently exhibited in it. One of these are the so-called "Momentum Balls" (German: "Impulskugeln"), an interactive experiment to demonstrate the physical momentum of masses.

Nine heavy, free-swinging steel balls are suspended from a scaffold approximately two meters high. The visitor deflects one of the outer balls and releases it. The potential energy of the ball is transported through all balls in the form of deformation energy without any noticeable change in the balls. The last ball accelerates and is deflected just as high as the first one. Variations with several balls at the same time demonstrate amplification and cancellation of the impulse.

An information board next to the experiment explains to visitors what to do and the physical background.

Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated:
In this popular experiment, the physical momentum of masses is demonstrated and played with: The visitor deflects one of the outer balls and releases it. The potential energy of the ball is transported through all balls in the form of deformation energy without any noticeable change in the balls. The last ball accelerates and is deflected just as high as the first one. Variations with several balls at the same time demonstrate amplification and cancellation of the impulse.

Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?:
The experiment ist quite common as desktop toy, but seeing it this large-scale was quite impressive. It worked very well despite some wear on the balls.

When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public:
24/7/365
