The Mackay Customs House completed in April 1902 is a single storey brick building located at the corner of Sydney and River Streets, on the southern bank of the Pioneer River. At the centre of the symmetrical building is the Customs Office or Long Room. To the front is the semi-circular Public Area with encircling colonnade with Doric columns supporting a moulded entablature at the centre of which is a raised parapet with the Royal coat of arms in relief.
Next to the Customs House is the former rectangular single-storey Bond Store.
