Mr. Hadley came up with the idea for this knife and was able to push the proverbial ship out to sea, but he was tragically killed in an accident in 2013, leaving others to bring the ship back to shore. The memorial reads:

The main reason this Bowie Knife sculpture even exists is due to Bob Hadley, whose idea it was to build a larger-than-life Bowie Knife sculpture to promote the city. Bob was an equine expert, receiving his Bachelor's degree in animal science from California Polytechnic University and later becoming a professor in their equine program. A former rodeo roper and team roper, Bob later rode cutting horses in both CHA and ACHA competitions, qualifying for the ACHA World Show and the American Championships in Non-Pro Competition. Bob also acted as an AQHA, APHA and NCHA judge. He and his wife trained and showed cutting horses, as well as raised and bred stallions. Throughout his life, Bob was interested in art, and applied the same focus and determination in learning the art of bronze sculpting. In the late 1990s, he sculpted the official trophy for the ACHA, as well as other trophies, most recently for the PBR. Bob made a point of accuracy in his art, and often sculpted horses and colts with great attention to detail. Bob was a teacher, a student, an entrepreneur, a poet, and accomplished sculptor and member of the Chisholm Trail Art Association, a family man, and a friend and mentor of many.
