L'Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière (IGN) est un établissement public français à caractère administratif ayant pour mission d'assurer la production, l'entretien et la diffusion de l'information géographique de référence en France.
Pour remplir cette mission, de très nombreux repères de nivellement ont été positionnés à travers la France. Ils ont des formes diverses mais l'un des plus courant est une rond de bronze portant la mention "Nivellement Général IGN"
D'autres repères ont aussi été placé par la PLM (Paris Lyon Marseille), une compagnie ferroviaire.
D'autres encore par le Ministère de la Reconstruction, après la guerre
D'autres par des communes pour qui les informations d'altitudes avaient une grande importance.

Ce repère, encore en bon état, est identifié comme "Nivellement - Assainissement de Marseille" et numéroté 380.
Sur le coté, une pastille est fixée au mur et indique son nom (M.C.B3 - 17) et son altitude (7,60 m).
Plus atrd, dans la même journée, je trouve le même modèle sous un pont. Après échanges par mail avec l'IGN, on me confirme que ce sont les plus vieux de la ville dont il ne reste qu'une poignée.

The National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN) is a French public establishment with an administrative character whose mission is to ensure the production, maintenance and dissemination of reference geographic information in France.
To fulfill this mission, numerous benchmarks have been positioned across France. They have various shapes but one of the most common is a bronze circle marked "Nivellement Général IGN"

This benchmark, still in good condition, is identified as "Leveling - Sanitation of Marseille" and numbered 380.
On the side, a sticker is fixed to the wall and indicates its name (M.C.B3 - 17) and its altitude (7.60 m).
More atrd, in the same day, I find the same model under a bridge. After exchanges by email with the IGN, I am confirmed that these are the oldest in the city of which only a handful remain.
