Marker Text: Few details exist about early Education for Burkburnett's African American children. Documents show an African American school for the 1920-21 school year with one student. Enrollment steadily increased and in 1927, land was purchased for a school. The old schoolhouse, a partial barn, was moved to the site where eight grades were taught by one teacher. Students were required to go to Wichita Falls for high school. In 1959, land was purchased, and a three-room brick school was built to accommodate students. In addition to commitment to education, the school became a focal point in the community, hosting events and activities. The school closed after integration, but the legacy of the educators and students remains. (2017)
