The Battle of Château-Thierry was fought from late May to late July 1918 and was one of the first actions of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) under General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. The American units, consisting of troops from both the United States Army and Marine Corps units, were the newest troops on the front in France and just barely out of training. Captain John T. Boss is interred in Springside Cemetery, alongside many members of his family. His grave marker reads
