Marble wall monument erected by Matthew Saunders in the chancel of St Nicholas' church, Shangton. It is dedicated to his wife Margaret, who died in 1605.

The inscription on the monument reads -

HOW SHOULD RESPECTLES DEATH SO RIGHTLY HIT
THOSE WHOSE PERFECTION STAYES YE WORLD FRO FALLING.
DID NOT HEAVNS MERCY CHOOSE THE ONLY FIT
TINHERIT BLISSE FOR EVER BY THEIR CALLINGE.
YOU IN WHOSE BRESTS LIVES ANY SPARK OF GOOD
PASS NOT WITHOUT COMPASSION WHEN YOU VIEW
HOW POORE A DEALE OF EARTH, OR STONE, OR WOOD
COVERS ALL GOODNES. AND SHALL ONCE HILL YOU.
ROPERET ILLA DIES QUA TANDE HAC MOLE SOLUTUS
CORPORIS IN CAELUM MENS TIBI PERVENIAT.

"Matthew was the son Francis Saunders (1513/14-85) of Welford and 3rd wife Frances Pope.

His father left him Hardwick and Shangton, a good third of his property after a life tenancy to his wife. Francis Saunders had bought the manor from John Wyrley in 1560. The Saunders family held it until 1637 when another (Mathews son?) Francis sold it to John Isham of Lamport . Son Francis was in great financial difficulties and it was provided that if Isham was unable to purchase the manor he should accept a mortgage of it and should lend Saunders £6,000. In 1639 he had already been fined £160 for 'depopulation and conversion of houses and lands' "
