Ecrivain et diplomate guatémaltèque, il reçut le prix Nobel de littérature en 1967. Ses œuvres particulièrement éclectiques, en font une des plus grandes figures littéraires de son pays. Dans ses Légendes du Guatémala, il fait revivre les principaux mythes de la civilisation maya. Par la suite, il aborda l’histoire et les problèmes sociaux de son pays à travers des romans dans lesquels le réalisme se mêle à la magie.

C’est par choix qu’il repose à Paris : sa sépulture est surmontée d’une stèle d’inspiration maya.
