Great Hall Entrance Pavilion Shield No.2 - The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, U.K. - Coats of Arms on Waymarking.com

Part of the Arms of the historic county of Warwickshire on the entrance pavilion to the Great Hall of Birmingham University.

This shield is carved in the stone spandrels of the great round-arch mullioned window which is set in the entrance pavilion to the Great Hall. The shield displays a bear standing on its hind paws which is chained to a tree stump and is wearing a muzzle and a collar.

This shield is one of six carved in the stone spandrels of the window, representing the arms of the Midland counties, of England, and is the first part of the Official blazon shown below:
'Arms: Gules a Bear erect Argent muzzle of the first collared and chained Or supporting a ragged Staff of the second the chain reflexed over the back and encircling the Staff on a Chief of the third three Cross-crosslets of the first. The Shield ensigned with a Mural Crown Gold.' (visit link)
