A bilingual sign inside St. Jacob Chapel tells the history of Brandenburg's only remaining medieval chapel, including the incredible story of 1892, when the entire building was moved 36 feet westward.

The sign reads:

The chapel of St. Jacob's hospital, which was first mentioned in 1349 was located next to Jakobsgraben bridge. This chapel is a classic example of the kind of small hospital chapels that were built at bridges outside the city walls so that passer-by could not avoid the beggar-occupants of the hospital. The interior of this small hall church has a vaulted ceiling. The semi-protruding octagonal tower was probably added in the 15th century and encloses a narrow and high-ceiling entrance hall. Brandenburg's Jakobskapelle gained fame when in 1892 a city building commissioner named Albert Kryzagorski had the entire structure moved 11 meters to the west in order to facilitate the flow of traffic. The hospital building on the opposite side of the street was torn down in 1898.
