Avant sa restauration en 1812, la fontaine comportait un bassin pour laver le linge. Il existait également un lavoir qui, en 1749, fut réparé à cause de son mauvais état.

En 1812, le maire Joseph-Jacques AMIC, fit restaurer la fontaine, qui fut longtemps la seule du village. Le nouveau mur-fontaine monumental comporte trois bassins alimentés par des mascarons anthropomorphes. La surverse alimentait une petite auge en grès. Ses dimensions soulignent l’importance des points d’eau à une époque où elle n’arrivait pas dans les foyers. Son utilisation par les habitants était d’ailleurs strictement réglementée et les amendes encourues dissuasives. Il était par exemple interdit d’être trop nombreux en même temps, pour ne pas faire baisser brusquement le niveau des bassins. Les légumes devaient être débarrassés de la terre et des racines pour ne pas troubler l’eau. En aucun cas, il n’était permis d’y laver de la viande, excepté au temps des agneaux et chevreaux où on pouvait laver les tripes, mais en faisant couler l’eau en dehors du bassin. Il était également prohibé de plonger dans les bassins de trop grands récipients (chaudrons, cornues, etc.), excepté en cas de feu.
Enfin, dans notre région où l’aigo es d’or, l’accès même à la fontaine publique pouvait être restreint, lors des « basses eaux ».
