The grave cover features a cross at the top, and below the cross is a photo medallion of Bishop Brondel as a young man, with "And other sheep I have John X.16" around the bottom. The inscription is simple:

Rt. Rev. John B. Brondel, D.D.
First Bishop of Helena
1884 -- 1903
R.I.P.

----

Bishop Brondel was born in Bruges, Belgium in 1842. He decided early in life to become a missionary in North America, and was ordained as a priest in 1864 at the age of 24, thanks to a dispensation granted by Pope Pius IX. He came to Vancouver, BC in 1866, working both as a teacher and a rector, and spending time in what was then Washington Territory. He became the third Bishop of Vancouver in 1879, serving in that capacity until becoming Vicar Apostolic of Montana in 1883. When the vicariate was elevated to the Diocese of Helena on March 7, 1884, Brondel was the first bishop. He served as bishop until his death in 1903, traveling the state, establishing new parishes and building churches, focusing on evangelism and growing the ranks of the priesthood. He was initially interred at the Cathedral of St. Helena, but was moved here in 1921.
