Šternberk Castle, originally a defensive medieval mansion with preserved cylindrical tower and remains of the main palace, attracts visitors an unusual atmosphere. Šternberk Castle is on of the oldest rock - built castles in Moravia. Some time after 1253 it was founded by Zdeslav of Šternberk who acquired this area to the North of Olomouc from Premysl Otakar II for military help. It concerned of courageous defence of Olomouc which was right in 1253 besetted by Hungarians and Kumans. It is pretended that Zdeslav of Šternberk commanded the defence of the town, defended Olomouc successfully and as a reward he was allowed to built a castle here.

Hrad Šternberk, puvodne obranné stredoveké sídlo s dochovanou válcovitou veží a zbytky opevnení hlavního paláce, láká návštevníky nevšední atmosférou. Puvabné kulisy hradu potom tvorí okolní lesopark a dnešní podhradí.

Hrad Šternberk založil v polovine 13. století Zdeslav z Chlumce a ze Šternberka, príslušník starého ceského šlechtického rodu. První písemný záznam najdeme v listine z roku 1269. Dokument zároven vymezoval hranice šternberského panství a kláštera Hradisko. Z obranného sídla byl hrad v 70. letech 14. století prestavován a rozšíren. Biskup Albert II. ze Šternberka, významný církevní hodnostár a vlivný diplomat, využíval hrad jako svou rezidenci. Pozornost biskupa se upírala predevším ke kapli, kterou nechal vyzdobit ve stylu panujícím tehdy na dvore Karla IV. Hrad zabírá relativne velkou rozlohu a obsahuje výzdobu od gotiky až po secesi.
